Mind the Gap

Gender Pay Gap

The deadline for all companies with over 250 employees to publish their gender pay gap figures has now passed with over 10,000 employers completing it in time.

The median pay gap among those companies was 9.7%.

These figures indicate that 78% of those businesses pay men more than women on average, whilst only 14% pay women more. This is based on the median measure, which is the level of pay that separates the top half of earners from the lower half. In total, only 8% of the employers who completed their report said that they had no pay gap between men and women these included Costa, KFC, Matalan, McDonald’s, Primark and Starbucks.

With this data Rebecca Hilsenrath, Chief Executive of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), hopes companies will start to address the pay gap “We want them [firms] to look at their flexible working policies, we want to look at them tackling bias, conscious and unconscious, and we’re looking to them to address instances of pregnancy and maternity pay discrimination, which is rising in this country.”
