Carers Week 2024: A Chance to Get the Advice and Support You Need

Carer’s week is here and there’s never been a better time to get the legal advice and support you need. Carers are one of the bedrocks of our society, providing a vital service that supports others to have meaningful lives and a higher standard of wellbeing.

This year’s theme is “Putting Carers on the Map,” highlighting the vital role of carers and the need for greater support and recognition, especially in the run-up to the Westminster General Election on 4 July. Hopefully, political parties take note and make a place for them in their manifestos.

For our part, we’re committed to providing legal advice and support to carers, helping them access what they need so that they can focus on the fantastic care that they provide to those who depend on them. In this short blog, we’re going to talk about some of that work and how carers can access it.

But first, let’s lay down some of the challenges facing carers in the UK.

The “No choice but to care” report

A key highlight of this year is the launch of the “No Choice But to Care” report. This report reveals that 62% of carers had no choice but to assume their roles due to the lack of other care options. The negative impacts on carers include mental and physical health challenges, financial strain, and difficulties in maintaining employment.

The report calls for a National Carers Strategy, reform of Carer’s Allowance, sustainable social care funding, and more support for carers’ health and wellbeing.

With those challenges facing the majority of carers, it’s clear any support and advice will go a long way.

At Gorvins, we understand that carers face unique legal challenges. During Carers Week and beyond, we’re committed to providing essential legal support and advice to carers and their families. Our services are designed to help carers navigate the complex legal landscape that often accompanies their roles.

Here’s just a few of the ways we can assist.

Wills and Estate Planning

Planning for the future is crucial for carers, who often need to ensure that their loved ones are taken care of in the event of their passing. Our team can help you draft and update your will, set up trusts, and manage estate planning to provide peace of mind and financial security.

Lasting Power of Attorney

Establishing a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is essential for carers managing the affairs of someone who is unable to make decisions for themselves. We can guide you through the process of setting up an LPA, ensuring that you have the legal authority to act on behalf of your loved one in financial, health, and welfare matters.

Probate and Estate Administration

When a loved one passes away, dealing with their estate can be overwhelming. Our probate services are designed to assist in administering estates efficiently and compassionately, handling all legal requirements and reducing the stress associated with this process.

Care Funding and Benefits Advice

Understanding the financial support available to carers can be complex. We offer advice on accessing benefits, funding for care, and navigating the social care system, ensuring you receive the support you are entitled to.

The Carers Trust also has a great resource for getting the benefits and money you’re entitled to.

The big takeaway

Carers Week is a great occasion for us as a society to demonstrate our appreciation for those who dedicate themselves to helping others week in week out.

Be sure to get involved in the Carers Week 2024 campaign!
